CELEBRATION OF LIGHT 2012

The Celebration of Light is an annual musical fireworks competition in Vancouver. The first “Symphony of Fire” was held from July 25 to August 5 of 1990. The celebration is one of Vancouver’s largest and most well known festivals. The multiple-day event has an estimated annual attendance of 1.4 million people.

The Celebration of Light is not only Vancouver’s biggest event, but it’s also the largest offshore fireworks competition in the world and attracts up to 400,000 spectators along English Bay each evening. Owned by the Not For Profit Vancouver Fireworks Festival Society, 2012 marks the 22nd consecutive year of the event, which contributes in excess of $39 million in incremental tourism and hospitality spending each year.

Participating countries in the 2012 Honda Celebration of Light Fireworks Festival are:

  • Vietnam: July 28th
  • Brazil: August 1st
  • Italy: August 4th

This will be the first time any of these countries have participated in what is the World’s largest offshore international fireworks competition. Expect to see something a little different with each country not only preparing the fireworks but choosing the soundtrack to their performance also. Visit Celebration of Lights for more info or Vancouver City Buzz for Traffic and Road Closures info.

If you’re new to Celebration of Light – the world’s biggest off-shore fireworks display, by the way – here’s how it works: Each team gets one night to wow the city with a choreographed fireworks display, set to a soundtrack broadcast over local radio.  Special fireworks judges weigh in on which team takes home the coveted championship.

But the real fun is just sitting back and watching it all.  Over the three-day festival, more than one million Vancouverites are expected to crowd English Bay and other top viewing areas.  Hardcore fans arrive early to stake out prime spots in the sand.  Bands and street food vendors lend the whole scene a party atmosphere.  Then, once the sun sets, the magic in the sky begins.

Head down to Sunset Beach before each show to experience more of the culture of each performing country on their specific day. Book your transportation with Vancouver Limousine contact us at 604-874-4880 or email us at limorez@shaw.ca
